The Australian Shepherd is sometimes just called Aussie Shepherd. It is a medium sized dog breed. Despite of it’s name, this breed is actually not from Australia, it was developed in the United States in 19th century. They were bred for herding. The Australian Shepherds are highly intelligent dogs, they are very easy to train and eager to please. They are very loyal and protective of their family. Aussie Shepherds are full of energy, they need lots of exercise and mental stimulation. They are the happiest when they are busy.
Australian Shepherds need to know who the alpha dog is and where their place is in the pack, they are not recommended for first time dog owners. They don’t like to be left alone for long periods. They are affectionate and intelligent dogs who have special bond with their owner. They are like little shadows, follow their owners wherever they go. Aussie Shepherds need to be kept busy otherwise they get bored and that can lead to behavioural problems.
They make great herding dogs. They are very protective and territorial dogs, that’s one of the reasons why they are not a good choice for first time dog owners. They need to be trained from very young age otherwise they tend to be dominant.
Life Span: 13-15 years
